Part 4: The Battle

Chapter 23

“Come along, King’s Daughter,” the general said, entering the house once more and beckoning for Amunet to follow him.

She glanced nervously at Eden, who smiled encouragingly at her. “Go on,” she said softly. “Go be the leader Yahweh made you to be.”

She nodded slowly, feeling her tense muscles tighten even more as she stepped away from her family after the general. Quickly, she found Nephthys crouching by Hadassah’s feet and picked him up. Tears slid down her cheeks when she saw the look on Hadassah’s face.

“Don’t forget us,” she cried. The girl sobbed. “Nephthys, boy, I’ll miss you.” Poor Hadassah looked so sad, tears leaking from her eyes and soaking her tunic. Eden gathered the little girl into her arms and squeezed her tightly. Elam wrapped his arms around the two of them and held them comfortingly. Amunet stole a moment to look at him. He seemed like such a man, already taking his father’s place as the man of the house.

Amunet then looked at Nephthys, who squirmed to get out of her arms. Then she looked at Hadassah. What if… No, she couldn’t. Nephthys was with her during her time in the pyramid. He was her cat, hers, hers…

A stirring in her soul woke her from her musings. The idea began to take root in her head as she looked from the cat to the girl then at the cat again. Where had this idea come from?

“Hadassah,” she began, feeling as though she would cry. She sighed sadly, and a tear trickled down as she struggled to do what she felt with every ounce of her being that she had to do. “Hadassah, would you like to take care of Nephthys for me?”

Hadassah jerked her head up and abruptly pulled herself away from Eden and Elam. Eyes wide, she darted over to Amunet and gasped, “Really?”

A lump formed in Amunet’s throat, but she swallowed it down and fought to hide the tears welling up in her blue eyes. “Yes.” Carefully, she bent down and set Nephthys gently on the floor.

The cat darted over to Hadassah, who promptly picked him up and began to pet him. Nephthys yawned and stretched, then eased himself into a comfortable position in the girl’s arms. “Thank you, Amyra! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Smiling sadly but elated at the joy the cat gave Hadassah, Amunet stepped out of the house after the general. Eden gave one look of pure pride in her act of love in her direction, and that made the giving up of Nephthys worth it.
